When a trauma occurs it becomes "locked in the brain" as a memory that the person does not know how to process; it is outside the person's range of comprehension.  The traumatic memory is stored in the brain with all the emotions, colors, smells, words and actions.  EMDR assists the client with retrieving this memory to desensitize and reprocess, allowing the traumatic memory to become just another memory.
EMDR:  TREATMENT OF CHOICE FOR TRAUMA
EMDR is not hypnosis.  It is a treatment that allows the client to be in charge.  Research finds EMDR to be more effective with fewer sessions needed than other therapies for trauma.

EMDR is a type of therapy that was founded by Dr. Francine Shapario.  EMDR has been extensively researched and is the treatment of choice for trauma.  Trauma occurs when a person experiences an overwhelming incident and does not have the coping skills to deal with it. When similar experiences occur, these telescope back into the original traumatic memory and the ability to function becomes compromised.
